Southeast Asia, also spelled South East Asia and South-East Asia, is a region situated in the southeastern part of the Asian continent. It is positioned south of mainland China, east of the Indian subcontinent, and northwest of mainland Australia, which belongs to Oceania. Southeast Asia shares borders with East Asia to the north, South Asia and the Bay of Bengal to the west, Oceania and the Pacific Ocean to the east, and Australia and the Indian Ocean to the south. The region comprises diverse countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar (Burma), and Brunei.

Spanning approximately 4,500,000 square kilometers (1,700,000 square miles), Southeast Asia accounts for about 8% of Eurasia and 3% of Earth’s total land area. With a population exceeding 675 million people, it represents around 8.5% of the world’s population, making it the third most populous region in Asia after South Asia and East Asia. The region boasts a rich cultural and ethnic diversity, with numerous languages spoken by different ethnic groups. Ten countries in Southeast Asia are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), an organization aimed at promoting economic, political, military, educational, and cultural integration among its member states.

The term “Southeast Asia” was coined in 1839 by American pastor Howard Malcolm in his book “Travels in South-Eastern Asia.” Initially, it only included the mainland section while excluding the maritime section. The term gained official usage during World War II with the establishment of the South East Asia Command (SEAC) in 1943 by the Allies. SEAC popularized the term “Southeast Asia,” although its definition varied at the time. For instance, it excluded the Philippines and a significant part of Indonesia but included Ceylon. However, a more standardized usage of the term emerged by the late 1970s, encompassing the territories it currently represents.

Indonesia, the largest country in Southeast Asia and the world’s largest archipelago, is geologically one of the most volcanically active regions. The region is also characterized by impressive mountain ranges, including Puncak Jaya in Papua, Indonesia, reaching a height of 5,030 meters (16,503 feet) and featuring the only glaciers in Southeast Asia. The highest peak in Southeast Asia, Hkakabo Razi, stands at 5,967 meters (19,577 feet) and is located in northern Burma, sharing the same range as Mount Everest.

The South China Sea holds great significance within Southeast Asia, and several countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and Singapore have rivers that flow into it.

Southeast Asia experiences a predominantly tropical climate, characterized by high temperatures and humidity year-round, along with abundant rainfall. While most of the region follows a wet and dry season due to monsoons and seasonal shifts in winds, there are variations. For example, northern Vietnam and parts of Central Vietnam have a subtropical climate influenced by cold waves from the Northeast. Some mountainous areas in the northern region and higher islands enjoy milder temperatures, while the “dry zone” of central Myanmar, in the rain shadow of the Arakan Mountains, qualifies as semi-arid due to low annual rainfall.

Even prior to European influence, Southeast Asia played a pivotal role in the global trading system. The region was renowned for its commodities, particularly spices like pepper, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg, which attracted traders from India, Arabia, Europe, and other regions. Over time, European involvement increased, with the Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, British, and French establishing control and annexing territories to safeguard and expand their trading activities. This imperialism led to shifts in commodity production, such as the development of rubber plantations in Malaysia, Java, Vietnam, and Cambodia, tin mining in Malaya, and rice cultivation in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam and the Irrawaddy River delta in Burma, in response to market demands.

Southeast Asia’s rich history, cultural diversity, stunning natural landscapes, and economic significance make it a captivating and dynamic region.
