North Asia, also referred to as Siberia, is the northernmost region of Asia that aligns with the Asian portion of Russia. It encompasses three Russian regions: Ural, Siberia, and the Russian Far East, covering a vast area of 13,100,000 square kilometers (5,100,000 sq mi). Geographically, it is bordered by the Arctic Ocean to the north, Eastern Europe to the west, Central and East Asia to the south, and the Pacific Ocean and North America to the east. Although North Asia is the largest subregion of Asia in terms of land area, it is sparsely populated, with approximately 33 million people, accounting for only 0.74% of Asia’s total population.
Historically, North Asia has been colonized and integrated into Russia, leading to occasional classification as part of Eastern Europe along with European Russia by international organizations. The region bears significant Russian cultural influence, owing to substantial Russian emigration from Europe since the 18th century. The majority of North Asia’s population consists of Slavs and other Indo-European groups, with over 85% of the inhabitants being of European descent.
Estimates indicate that around 33 million Russian citizens reside east of the Ural Mountains, which serve as a recognized but informal geographical boundary between Europe and Asia. Among these residents, the majority are Russians of Slavic origin and russified Ukrainians. The native Turkic, Tungusic, and Mongolic peoples, who once populated certain parts of Siberia, now constitute a minority due to the process of Russification over the past three centuries. Russian census records suggest that they make up only approximately 10% of the region’s population, with the Buryats (numbering 445,175) and Yakuts (numbering 443,852) being the largest groups according to the 2002 census. Additionally, there are approximately 500,000 Tatars in Siberia, although 300,000 of them are Volga Tatars who settled in Siberia during colonization periods. Other notable ethnic groups in the region include ethnic Germans, totaling about 400,000 residents.
