The largest continent on Earth, both in terms of land area and population, is Asia. It encompasses over 44 million square kilometers, which accounts for approximately 30% of Earth’s entire land area and 8% of its total surface area. With a long history of hosting for the majority of humanity, Asia was the location of many of the earliest civilizations. It is presently home to around 4.7 billion people, representing approximately 60% of the global population and surpassing the combined population of all other continents.
Asia occupies the vast landmass of Eurasia, alongside Europe and Afro-Eurasia, which includes Africa and Europe. The Pacific Ocean bounds its eastern side, the Indian Ocean on its southern side, and the Arctic Ocean to the north. The demarcation between Asia and Europe is neither a physical nor geographical boundary, but rather a historically and culturally created concept. It is somewhat arbitrary and has remained variable since its inception in classical antiquity. The partition of Eurasia into two continents reflects differences in culture, language, and ethnicity that exist along a spectrum rather than strictly divided by a clear line. Typically, Asia is recognized to the east of the Suez Canal, separating it from Africa. It is also located to the east of the Ural Mountains and Ural River, the Turkish Straits, and to the south of the Caspian and Black seas, separating it from Europe.
With both GDP nominal and PPP values, Asia boasts the largest continental economy worldwide and is rapidly expanding. China, as of 2023, dominates the economy, contributing almost half of the continent’s GDP nominal. Other significant economies include Japan, India, South Korea, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, with all ranking within the top 20 economies based on nominal and PPP values. In the Global Office Locations 2011 report, Asia excelled with four of the top five office locations globally, consisting of Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, and Seoul. Hong Kong, in particular, is a popular choice, with 68 percent of international firms with offices there.
There are various approaches to the regional division of Asia. The following subdivision into regions is used, among others, by the UN statistics agency UNSD. This division of Asia into regions by the United Nations is done solely for statistical reasons and does not imply any assumption about political or other affiliations of countries and territories.
- North Asia (Siberia)
- Central Asia (The ‘stans)
- Western Asia (The Middle East or Near East and the Caucasus)
- South Asia (Indian subcontinent)
- East Asia (Far East)
- Southeast Asia (East Indies and Indochina)
Asia has extremely diverse climate features. Climates range from arctic and subarctic in Siberia to tropical in southern India and Southeast Asia. It is moist across southeast sections, and dry across much of the interior. Some of the largest daily temperature ranges on Earth occur in western sections of Asia. The monsoon circulation dominates across southern and eastern sections, due to the presence of the Himalayas forcing the formation of a thermal low which draws in moisture during the summer. Southwestern sections of the continent are hot. Siberia is one of the coldest places in the Northern Hemisphere, and can act as a source of arctic air masses for North America. The most active place on Earth for tropical cyclone activity lies northeast of the Philippines and south of Japan.
