The largest continent on Earth, both in terms of land area and population, is Asia. It encompasses over 44 million square kilometers, which accounts for approximately 30% of Earth’s entire land area and 8% of its total surface area. With a long history of hosting for the majority of humanity, Asia was the location of many of the earliest civilizations. It is presently home to around 4.7 billion people, representing approximately 60% of the global population and surpassing the combined population of all other continents.

Central Asia, also known as Middle Asia, encompasses a vast region of Asia extending from the Caspian Sea in the west to western China and Mongolia in the east. It stretches from Afghanistan and Iran in the south to Russia in the north. This region includes the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, commonly referred to as the “-stans” due to their names ending with the Persian suffix “-stan,” meaning “land of.”

In ancient times, specifically during the pre-Islamic and early Islamic eras, Central Asia was predominantly inhabited by Iranian peoples. Eastern Iranian-speaking groups such as the Bactrians, Sogdians, Chorasmians, as well as semi-nomadic Scythians and Dahae, populated the area. With the expansion of Turkic peoples, Central Asia also became the ancestral home for the Uzbeks, Kazakhs, Tatars, Turkmen, Kyrgyz, and Uyghurs. The Turkic languages gradually replaced the Iranian languages spoken in the region, except in Tajikistan and areas where Tajik is spoken.

Central Asia played a crucial role historically as it was closely interconnected with the Silk Road trade routes, serving as a vital crossroads for the exchange of people, commodities, and ideas between Europe and the Far East.

As of 2019, Central Asia has a population of approximately 72 million people across five countries: Kazakhstan (19 million), Kyrgyzstan (7 million), Tajikistan (10 million), Turkmenistan (6 million), and Uzbekistan (35 million).

Due to its landlocked nature and lack of a significant water body, Central Asia experiences notable temperature variations, excluding the hot and sunny summer months. Most areas have a dry and continental climate, characterized by hot summers and cool to cold winters with occasional snowfall. Except for high-elevation regions, the climate is predominantly semi-arid to arid. Lower elevations endure scorching summers with intense sunshine, while winters witness sporadic rainfall and/or snow from Mediterranean low-pressure systems. Monthly precipitation remains minimal from July to September, increases during autumn (October and November), reaches its peak in March or April, and swiftly decreases in May and June. Strong winds are common, leading to occasional dust storms, particularly towards the end of summer in September and October.

Since gaining independence in the early 1990s, the Central Asian republics have been gradually transitioning from state-controlled economies to market economies. However, reforms have been cautious and selective, aiming to mitigate social costs and improve living standards. All five countries are implementing structural changes to enhance competitiveness. Notably, Kazakhstan is the sole CIS country included in the 2020 and 2019 IWB World Competitiveness rankings. These nations have focused on modernizing their industrial sectors and promoting the growth of service industries through business-friendly fiscal policies and other measures, with the goal of reducing the agricultural sector’s contribution to GDP. Between 2005 and 2013, all countries, except Tajikistan, witnessed a decline in the agricultural sector’s share while observing a rise in industry. Turkmenistan experienced the fastest industrial growth, while the services sector thrived in the remaining four countries.
